Taters Turbo/Cage/Dash/Interior Build

Ok where to start. First I want to say that I almost never post "in progress" pictures BUT here recently I've really started liking some of the other forums that have "build" threads. Its really nice to see a project come to life.

So for starters a little history and goals for the car. The cars a 91 Camaro Z28 that started this build with a 360hp LT1 with LE3 heads and an LE2 cam, a stock 6 speed and a 9" rear with 3.70 gears. She also had a semi stock thirdgen interior. Here's what I started with.

The goal for this build was to build the Engine to handle 15-18lbs of boost and make around 700hp. It also had to be reliable enough to take a road trip just about anyway, and be able to make lap after lap on the Super Speedway and Road Atlanta! To do that I splayed the stock bottom end, added a forged Cola crank, Eagle H-beam Rods and Mahle 2618 forged pistons. The bottom end and the heads are studded with ARP hardware. Since I had to get all the machine work done for the splayed caps AND get it punched out .030 I just had RPM assemble the short block while they had it. THANKS Daryl!

Feeding the engine is going to be twin Walbro intank 255's through 96# injectors (yes that big because I plan on running E85 at some point.) The hot side is all mild steel tubing starting with 1-5/8" primary's to 2.5" passenger side log transitioning to a 3" log on the driver side into a turbonetics TC78. The reason I went with a TC series is because (A.) its cheap! 950 new shipped to the door! and (B.) The TC series is more compact that the T series and the TC78 should spool faster than the T76. These mock up pictures were done with a T70 which is what I was originally going to run but that bastard Tim had to go out and buy a friggin S480 and I got blower envy . I'm using a Tial 38mm WG and its probably going to be to small to run anything under 12-14lbs, even then I may see some boost creep. If I do I can swap out to a JGS 40mm which bolts right up and is about 30% more efficient. Ill cross that bridge when I get there.

For the cold side I have 3" Aluminum piping running from the turbo to the A2A Intercooler (30X12X4). I'm still working on whether I want 3 or 4" piping from the intercooler to the engine.
Progress pic of the intercooler mounting.

Ill be positng up some more later with pics of the Cage, Engine Bay and Interior!

More fun stuff! Got the radiator sat, It's straight from Joe Gibbs Racing and its 22.5" X 31" X 3.5" its a two pass, with an oil cooler and a friggin -24AN feed line! Considering its about 3 times the size of the stocker I think itll keep me cool in any weather/conditions!

Now on to the Cage/Interior... For some reason I cant find pics of when I had the TA dash, center console and door panels mocked up once I find them ill post them up. Here's some pics of the cage, I know I could have saved about 30-40 lbs by going to a chromoly cage but I cant legally (NHRA) weld chromoly with a Mig so I decided to save some money and just go mild steel, I used 1-3/4" .095 wall DOM which is damn near as strong as the 0.83 wall Chromoly that I would have used it Just weighs more.. So ya, the goal for the cage was to have something that would work for both road racing and the drag strip. Its not quite a 12 point since I dont have the two bars that go to the tunnel so technicaly its an 11 point... All the tubing I bent up with a Model 3 bender that has hydraulics (dont think I will ever get a bender without them!).

Here Ive started making room for the MONSTER radiator! Ive got to weld in the cross support and cut out the lower mount and fab up a new lower mount that drops the radiator down 4". It'll sit lower tha I would really like but I think I can put some bracing in that'll ensure IF I hit a small animal or something that it doesnt come up through the radiator.

1997 Z28: 418 ci, solid roller cam, WCCH L92's, maybe some spray, etc. you get the general idea. Don't worry... it's never going to run again.
2003 3500 QCSB Cummins: 5" straight exhaust, South Bend Clutch, Predator Diable/Puck stacked tune, boost fooler, leveling kit, 35" tires.

Well I think its the dark charcol but that doesnt matter, Im refinishing the door panels in Black vinyl on the plastic parts and the perforated insert is red perforated vinyl. Kind of like this without the silver and the vinyl on the arm rest, also my red vinyl is perforated to match the stock look. Im also filling in the cup holder and ash tray on my console and recovering that in the same black vinyl.... kinda keeping with the theme of the car which is red, black and white...

Are you rattle canning it or dying it? I've had better luck with the RIT dye myself... the black comes out A LOT darker and doesn't fade..

The only piece Im dying is the arm rest, the rest of the door panel is going to be wrapped with new vinyl that matches the dash pattern. Im also thinking about dying the rear plastics instead of recovering them. Depending on how the dye takes to that nasty red I may just swap them out for some thirdgen grey plastic and dye those instead....
